Mopti: Venice in the Sahel |
||||||||||
Five years ago Mopti became a gateway for visitors from Europe, thanks to the airport at Sévaré (12km from Mopti). There are direct flights (charters) to Mopti from Paris, Marseille and Basel/Mulhouse. Within a few hours you fly from Europe to this desert gateway to begin your trip to Dogon country or on Niger river towards Timbuktu. Picture Gallery |

* City and Port: The city of Mopti is not an architectural highlight. Staying here is still somehow nice, observing the boats at the port or visiting the handicraft and antique shops (hidden behind the truck depot at this time). Visit the Bozo bar (good spot for pictures) or go for an afternoon trip by pirogue in Bani and Niger river. * Hotels: In Mopti downtown there are no "good" hotels. The "Ba-Faro" needs some renovation and the Campement is somehow .... as well. A good but more expensive place is Hotel Kanaga, about 20 minutes walk following the river. There are some small (newer) hotels towards the rice fields. There is a bigger choice of hotels at Sévaré (because of the airport and bus station). To get to Mopti you always have to take the bush taxi (12km). |

Crossing the port: To cross the port from one end to the other there are always pirogues available and it costs 25 CFA per person (leaving from and arriving at Bozo bar). You can book shorter or longer pirogue trips at the port or down to the confluence of Bani and Niger river. You have to bargain to get a good price! Back to itineries overview |
